Lawyers In The Operating Room: Crowell & Moring Launch Healthcare Consultancy

The healthcare consulting market is continuing its rapid growth, driven by a myriad of factors such as adoption of modernization and digital transformation, rising levels of illness, and increasing efforts to lower costs and maximize profits. The wide range of expertise required means that healthcare consulting is no longer the purview of firms specifically built around the sector, and a Washington, D.C.-based law firm recently joined the fray, launching a consultancy business focused on healthcare innovation.

Law firm Crowell & Moring announced the launch of its strategic healthcare consulting subsidiary Crowell Health Solutions on January 26, seeking to assist client organizations and technology companies in expanding health equity, boosting patient care, and reducing expenses by leveraging digital health innovations. The new consultancy will focus on providing services in strategic advising, forming alliances, policy and participation, and compliance.

Crowell & Moring chair Philip Inglima said: “Crowell Health Solutions is the latest expansion of our growing health care platform and reflects the significant innovation and transformation that is being advanced across the industry…Our new consulting firm, which offers solution-focused advice at the intersection of business and public policy, provides a valuable new dimension to the work that we have been doing in key areas such as digital health.”

The consultancy will be managed by three of Crowell’s lawyers: Jodi Daniel, Janet Walker, and Troy Barsky, who will lead the new endeavor while maintaining their roles at the law firm. Daniel and Barsky are both former officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, bringing federal-level healthcare experience to the new team. The initial client base will be founded on relationships the legal firm has already established, providing the opportunity to offer value-added services and attract and engage new clients.

With the recent pandemic bringing increased investment in and utilization of digital healthcare technology, as well as changing government regulations on health innovation, the market is ripe for a firm with a strong legal background and well-focused target sectors. Crowell & Moring’s latest move should provide an excellent complement to its legal services, and open up new opportunities to engage with diverse clients in the competitive healthcare consulting market.
