Google has announced a suite of water stewardship commitments designed to outpace its data center consumption by 2030. Operating 165 projects across 97 watersheds, the tech giant aims to replenish more than 19 billion gallons of water annually. This target is more than double its 2024 consumption footprint, translating to enough water to supply Los Angeles for over 40 days.

Google has committed over $500 million to date toward developing water, wastewater, and reuse infrastructure. This capital helps underfunded municipal utility partners upgrade public systems, fund leak detection, and expand local supplies. The company is also implementing a data-driven framework to assess watershed health before construction, mandating air-cooled systems or recycled water in high-risk zones.

On the regional level, Google is deploying $17 million to launch new conservation projects across seven states. In Iowa, funding allows farmers to convert 5,000 acres into perennial pasture to curb fertilizer runoff. In Nebraska, the funds back a water line leak detection program in Omaha, while Texas allocations support the Texas Water Impact Fund to secure rural community water sources.

Furthermore, the company is evaluating 700 additional infrastructure and agricultural proposals through its recent Water Replenishment Request for Information. This includes sourcing alternative cooling inputs, such as an ongoing partnership in Douglas County, Georgia, which utilizes treated wastewater for server cooling.

"Water is a critical component of data center development and operations," Google stated in its announcement, noting that water cooling cuts hardware energy use by roughly 10%. By funding nature-based solutions and utility upgrades, the company plans to scale its digital infrastructure without depleting local municipal supplies.
