Deloitte’s 2026 U.S. Health Care Outlook finds that many health system and health plan executives anticipate outperforming competitors in 2026, yet widespread uncertainty persists amid financial pressures, regulatory fluctuation, and consumer challenges. The survey of 120 senior leaders identifies three strategic priorities that could support resilience and growth: enhancing consumer health through digital services, expanding the use of generative and agentic artificial intelligence across operations, and forming partnerships beyond the traditional health care sector.

The report notes that 43% of executives feel “uncertain” or “neutral” about the industry’s near-term prospects, up from 28% in 2025, highlighting concerns about future policy shifts. Investing in integrated digital platforms and virtual care options remains central, as nearly 60% of respondents plan to bolster remote and preventive care delivery to meet rising demand.

AI adoption is a key theme, with over 80% of health care leaders expecting generative and agentic AI to deliver substantial value in 2026, from clinical support to back-office functions. However, only about one-third of organizations currently scale AI beyond pilot stages. The report suggests that enterprise-wide deployment could accelerate decision-making, cut administrative burdens, and enhance patient experience. Collaboration with other industries also ranks highly, as nearly 80% of executives plan strategic alliances to bring new capabilities into health care.

Deloitte concludes that organizations willing to embrace whole-system change by using technology, working across sectors, and focusing on consumer-centered care are more likely to manage disruption effectively and improve long-term results.
