The Cancer AI Alliance (CAIA), a collaboration among leading U.S. cancer centers, has announced the first scalable federated learning platform designed to advance cancer research, developed in partnership with Slalom. The initiative includes institutions such as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Johns Hopkins University, supported by technology partners including AWS, Deloitte, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Slalom, and Ai2. The platform allows AI models to learn from millions of clinical data points across institutions without compromising patient privacy or data security.
The federated learning framework enables AI models to train locally on de-identified data and share insights centrally to strengthen collective research outcomes. Brenda Young, Managing Director at Slalom, commented, “CAIA demonstrates how collaboration between leading cancer centers and technology partners can unlock new insights and reshape the use of Data & AI to diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer.” The alliance plans to expand participation and research models over the next year to address key oncology challenges.
