by HIMSS, found 78% of health systems currently run AI initiatives, but only 52% believe they can implement them at scale. Respondents cited inconsistent data governance, cybersecurity exposure, and workforce alignment challenges as key barriers. 

Guidehouse Partner Erik Barnett said, “Healthcare is ahead of other industries in deploying AI with point solutions, but many leaders are struggling to articulate a cohesive enterprise-wide strategy.” He added that AI planning must involve the full executive team rather than only technology leadership.

The survey also identified financial and operational concerns: 48% worried about privacy and security risks, 48% cited budget constraints, 42% pointed to data quality issues, and 36% reported insufficient expertise or leadership alignment. The findings indicate organizations must redesign workflows, define enterprise-level governance, and prepare staff for AI-augmented roles to avoid stalled implementations and weak returns on investment. Guidehouse noted that providers should adopt system-wide strategies and strengthen infrastructure before moving toward agent-driven automation. The firm, which advises healthcare providers, payers, and government agencies, expects organizations that address readiness gaps to gain greater value from current and future AI deployments.
